Fruit

to be a fruit

to be a little fruity

to be “strange”

to be “unusual”

to be queer

some of the most beautiful people I have ever known identified as queer

people who were not just beautiful, but brave, creative, kind, thoughtful and strong

with a special skill set for seeing the world in a way that no one else could

my queer friends have gone off to become

brilliant designers, activists, lawyers and other amazing positions

that call for change

bringing so much value and wonder to a world that initially rejected them

to be a fruit then

to plant seeds

which grow wondrous things

doesn’t seem to do enough justice

as to be queer often means to be valiant

in the face of adversity,

to be tenacious,

to be warm-hearted,

to be caring,

to be passionate

perhaps those are better words

although the words, are not ours to choose

in the end, the greatest display of respect

is calling individuals by the name they desire

and not diminishing them with words of hate
