Iris Goddess of the Rainbow

ILLUSTRATION BY ERAANI PÉREZ, COVER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHUNI LUCÍA PÉREZ

I went through a period where I was obsessed with Greek Mythology and my favorite deity from the pantheon was always Iris, the Goddess of the Rainbow. Iris is seen as the personification of the rainbow. She was the original messenger of the Gods, the one who would let sailors know when a storm was over, and often was thought to be what connected the mortal world to the immortal one. This version of Iris is actually based on my godmother, Karen Rudolph. She was an activist for LGBT rights, involved in the movement against the war in Vietnam, and later joined the cause for Native American issues. It was impossible for me to not use her as my modern day Iris.
