Talking 'toons with Bode Burnout

TSKC interviews Instagram crush Bode Burnout!

You have a great sense of humor that translates well into your comic style illustrations. Out of curiosity where do you get your dry sense of humor?

Thanks, I guess I've always used humour as a way to get over things. I think my grandma is pretty funny so I'm assuming anything funny comes from her.

What was growing up like for you? What inspired you to create?

I was scared of everything haha. I couldn't even play the Nintendo. I have had anxiety my whole life and never knew what it was as a child. What inspired me is my life and my friends lives and things that happen to people that can be annoying or sad to deal with. It's nice to make people feel better when they can relate. It makes me feel better to know that I can make someone's day with a drawing.

What's something you feel pretty passionate about?

Equal rights, poker, painting, drawing, singing and my nieces and nephews.

This issue we are focusing on work that is in some way related to bodies, what’s your relationship like with your body?

Love/ hate. I,  like a lot of women, have had body issues my whole life. I have been healthy and unhealthy and it's something I still struggle with. I like to draw all different body types and realistic body types especially tits. Hardly any are perfect.

You’ve got a couple of Simpson’s references in your work, do you feel like that show is a pretty big influence for you? Any other shows/animators/illustrators you admire at the moment?

I'm not sure if the Simpsons is just an influence on my drawing or my whole life haha. I love Futurama, American Dad, Archer and South Park. I fucking love Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, and regular show at the moment.

Any all-time favorites?

Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Ren and Stimpy, and anything I grew up watching really!

Most of your work on Instagram is on colored paper and sharpie, what do you like about this medium? Do work with any other mediums?

Ahh it's simple. Sometimes I put a lot of thought into my drawings and sometimes It's almost like I think of something and just need to draw it out straight away and then I like how shitty and rough it looks so I just keep it in that moment. I've been using thinner pens lately and hopefully will start painting again soon. I would prefer to start using an iPad I just can't afford one yet.
