Skinned Knees

mitos del barrio

Skinned Knees
mitos del barrio

growing up in the deep, deep south

la frontera

between Texas and México

we had a lot of things to fear

LA CHUPACABRA

a strange beast

who sucks the blood

from unsuspecting goats

in the dark desert night

LA LLORONA

a mother turned murderer

who drowned her children

then herself

and is said to haunt

the river at night

EL CUCUY

the Mexican boogeyman

because we weren’t up for that

potato-sack ghoul gringos

were scared of

monsters, spirits, myths

we held so close

to our hearts and

loved to frighten each other with

these creatures were

less scary to us

than the reality of el barrio

kidnappings, drugs, guns, violence

our myths were our saviours

they helped us forget

the terror that is reality
